Two pedestrians killed in separate Long Island auto crashes

SUFFOLK COUNTY – An unidentified man was killed Sunday morning when he walked into the patch of a car on the Long Island Expressway east of Exit 51 in Dix Hills, Suffolk County Police said. The driver swerved to avoid hitting the man, but was unsuccessful.

The victim, who was not carrying and ID, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was described as a Hispanic man, possibly in his 50s with graying brown hair and a mustache. He was wearing a red, white and blue striped button-down collar shirt under a green hooded zipper sweatshirt, black sneakers, light blue jeans and a brown leather belt with “El Salvador” printed on it.

Anyone with information about the incident or who may know the identity of the victim is asked to call the police at 631-854-8252 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

The other fatality occurred at 11 p.m. on Friday night, May 9 when another pedestrian was struck and killed in North Amityville. The victim was identified as Takus Smiling, 34, of North Amityville. He attempted to cross Route 110 after another man did. A Motorist, who saw the first man and slowed down, called police on his cell phone. When they arrived, they discovered Smiling.

No summonses were issued and no charges are anticipated at this time, police said.
