16-year-old sent to state prison for gun possession

ALBANY  – Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced Tuesday that Shacream Morris-Caldwell, 16, of Green Street in Albany was sentenced to two years in prison and two years post release supervision.

In March he pled guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a felony.

“Every week this office sends at least one young man to state prison for gun possession, and I have had enough. The arms race that is going on within certain neighborhoods in Albany must come to an end and we must work as a community to take back our streets and our children,” said Soares.

On November 27, 2007 at 10:10 P.M. in the area of 314 Colonie Street, Albany Police officers were investigating the robbery of a deliveryman. The officers observed Morris-Caldwell, who fit the physical description given by the victim.

The officers asked him to stop, but he refused and continued walking away. The Officers grabbed Morris-Caldwell to stop him and as he struggled, a firearm fell to the ground. The police recovered a loaded .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun.
