Levy’s plan for traffic relief in Shirley approved by Suffolk Legislature |

HAUPPAUGE - A plan by Suffolk County Executive Steven Levy to provide improvements on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46) where it intersects Surrey Circle will soon come to fruition in Shirley. At its March 18 general meeting, the Suffolk County Legislature approved two resolutions that had been introduced by Levy, one to acquire land needed for an expansion of this intersection and another to provide a second left-turn lane onto the road. “This area is prone to traffic problems because it is right next to the Mastic/Shirley train station,” Levy said, pointing out that the timing of lights at the intersection will also be adjusted to enable better traffic flow. “The proposed addition of a second turn lane will alleviate traffic congestion at this intersection while ensuring a smooth transition for automobiles heading onto Surrey Circle.” Suffolk County will pay $400,000 for the land needed to widen William Floyd Parkway, along with an additional $150,000 for the actual engineering of the second turn lane on the county road. “Traffic congestion is a nuisance on any road and in any situation,” Levy said. “That’s why we provided the leadership that was necessary to improve this vital intersection in Shirley.” |
