NORTH AMITYVILLE – Suffolk County Police investigated the robbery of an Amityville village resident that led to a motor vehicle crash last Thursday afternoon.

Pedro Gonzalez, 53, was selling sneakers from his 1997 Ford Explorer at the end of Chestnut Road in North Amity when he confronted by five men. At least one was armed with a handgun. They men took his cell phones, about 50 pairs of sneakers and a large amount of cash.

The men fled on foot along a path to an adjacent street. Gonzalez drove his vehicle around the block and saw the men loading his merchandise into a 1999 Nisan sedan. He chased the men in his SUV and struck the Nissan, driven by one of the robbers. The other four fled on foot.

The impact caused the Nissan to crash into a 1995 Lincoln sedan, driven by Robert Hones, 63, who was driving on New Highway. He suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Nissan fled on foot.

The owner of the Nissan told police he was with his accountant when his car was stolen prior to the robbery.

The sneakers were recovered, but the cell phones and cash were not.
