Albany – Albany County and Scenic Hudson officials hope to conclude a deal with Canadian Pacific Railroad to acquire their abandoned rail line passing through Albany, Bethlehem and New Scotland, and develop it into a rail trail.

The county has partnered with Scenic Hudson to acquire the rail bed. The county has received a $350,000 state grant, which was matched by Scenic Hudson to support the purchase of the land in 1995. The rail bed is nine miles long.

“Rail Trails are a fantastic way to create opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors, for children to ride bicycles in a safe environment, and for promoting ‘green’ transportation,” said Seth McKee, Scenic Hudson’s Land Conservation director.
