Suffolk County Executive, FEMA, State Emergency officials tour damaged beaches

Hauppauge – Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy joined federal and state emergency management representatives to document the “cumulative effect damage” being felt by area beaches from a series of tropical storms, nor’easters and squalls.

Levy will press the case for state and federal officials to recognize the cumulative impact of storms dating back to November upon beaches that were already severely damaged by a nor’easter in April, and possibly add the recent damage on to the April totals.

Since the April 15th storm, Levy said, beaches have been hit by remnants of Tropical Storm Noel in early November, a nor’easter December 15-16, and a heavy rain, wind and surf event on the evening of December 23.

Suffolk was made eligible for approximately $12 million in damages and costs from the April storm, the first $1.9 million of which is now being processed. But Levy cautioned that more severe weather throughout the winter will continue to impact un-restored beaches.

Officials from FEMA and New York SEMO (State Emergency Management Office) have been assessing damaged sites this week, including beaches at Asharoken, Huntington, Brightwaters, Islip, Babylon, Captree, Davis Park, Fire Island, East Hampton and county parks at Smith Point, Cupsogue, Meschutt and Montauk.
