Schumer steers clear of New York debate over driver’s license policy change

Washington – The usually vocal US Senator Charles Schumer Wednesday said he didn’t want to get involved with the state debate over whether illegal immigrants should be issued New York State driver’s licenses without possessing Social Security cards.

That policy change, by fellow Democrat Governor Eliot Spitzer, is to take effect in the weeks and months ahead.

When asked about it Wednesday by EmpireStateNews.net, Schumer said he would only talk about federal issues including his proposal for “real ID”, making it harder for illegal aliens to obtain driver’s licenses.

“I’ve also proposed as part of the immigration bill, and if it would have been part of it, I think it would have passed, a bio-metric, non-forgeable Social Security card with your picture, that everyone had to show before they’d get a job, so it can’t be forged,” he said.

Schumer said he hasn’t “mixed in on the state issue because we have a lot of federal issues here on immigration, but you can see where I’m coming from with these two proposals.
