Over $4.5 million in disaster assistance for Queens, Brooklyn

File may take time to start streaming on slower Internet connections

New York – State and federal officials have approved more than $4.5 million in disaster grants and low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered damages during the August 8 severe storms and flooding.

The following is a summary of activities as of close of business October 5, 2007:

•2,746 households and businesses registered for assistance.

•$3,056,433 in grants to 1,232 households has been approved by FEMA for home repairs and renting alternative housing.

•$411,799 in grants to 268 households has been given by the State Other Needs Assistance Program and FEMA for other serious needs.

•$1,315,700 in low-interest disaster loans have been approved to 35 households and two businesses by the U. S. Small Business Administration.

•Four inspectors are in the field verifying property damage in Queens and Brooklyn eligible for Individual Assistance.

Residents of Brooklyn and Queens are reminded that the first step in obtaining disaster assistance is to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Call toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech impaired, during the hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., daily. Registration also is available online at www.fema.gov.

After registering with FEMA, registrants may visit one of three SBA-FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers where applicants can get help filling out their SBA Loan application for disaster loans and to learn more about their application with FEMA.
