Suffolk -- A Northport High School substitute teacher charged with sexual abuse, attempted sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child charges has been acquitted after 10 days of trial in Suffolk County first district court. Thomas Baudier of 26 Valley Road, Northport, was arrested twice this year, on March 27 and again on May 7 for separate allegations involving improper conduct during two separate incidents that involved teenage female students. Northport High School authorities, where Baudier worked as a permanent substitute teacher, notified police of an inappropriate relationship between the teacher and a 16-year-old student resulting in Baudier's March arrest. Baudier surrendered to county police in May for an additional incident involving the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old female. The bench trial before Judge Salvatore Alamia began August 23. In the 16-year-old alleged victim's case, Baudier was charged with one count of third degree sexual abuse, a "B" misdemeanor, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, an "A" misdemeanor. A school social worker, a police detective, the alleged victim and three of her friends took the stand. Internet instant messages and phone records were admitted into evidence. In the case involving a 14-year-old alleged victim, the defendant was charged with attempted sexual abuse, a violation, and one misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child. The victim and the victim's friend testified. Judge Alamia rendered his decision Tuesday from the bench, acquitting Baudier of all charges alleged in both cases. The court found the evidence in each case insufficient to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. |
