Investigations launched into fatal Ground Zero fire

File may take time to start streaming on slower Internet connections

New York – Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau Tuesday announced that his office has opened an investigation into the fire at the Deutsche Bank building at 130 Liberty Street, which resulted in the deaths of two New York City firefighters.

The building, severely damaged but still standing following the 9/11 attack, was being carefully dismantled.

Assistant district attorneys from the Manhattan DA’s Rackets Bureau have been in contact with fire marshals from the New York City Fire Department.

Morgenthau said his office will work with the fire department as well as other interested agencies to determine whether any criminal violations occurred in connection with the August 18 fire.

Meanwhile, State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo also said Tuesday that his Public Integrity and Environmental Protection bureaus have begun to review information about the fire.

“Obviously, any criminal investigation relating to the fire by District Attorney Morgenthau would take precedence and the Attorney General’s Office is prepared to assist in that investigation in any way possible,” said Cuomo.
