Hempstead town’s VITA program offers seniors free income tax prep

File may take time to start streaming on slower Internet connections

The Town of Hempstead’s annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is set to enter its 32nd year.  The VITA Program is sponsored by Hempstead Town’s Department of Senior Enrichment, under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service.  VITA volunteers are assigned to town senior centers and local libraries and assist senior residents in the preparation of their federal and state income tax returns.

Last year, 1,600 town residents received assistance with their tax returns at one of Hempstead Town’s VITA sites.

Participants must bring last year’s tax return (2005), all wage and earning statements (W2 and 1099), all interest dividend and pension statements, 2006 property tax receipts, social security cards and photo identification of all those filing tax returns.

Senior residents who are interested in having their income tax returns prepared by a VITA volunteer can obtain a schedule of upcoming VITA dates by calling the Department of Senior Enrichment at (516) 485-8100.
