Urban Forestry grants announced for 42 communities

Nearly $448,000 in urban and community forestry grants were announced Thursday to 42 communities across New York State. The awards support tree planting and forestry programs that will enhance community landscapes and provide environmental benefits to residents in urban and suburban areas.

Under the Urban and Community Forestry Grants program, which is funded by New York State and the U.S. Forest Service and administered by the State Department of Environmental Conservation, grants are available to cities, villages, towns and not-for-profit organizations. The Community Greening Grants promote municipal urban forestry programs through tree planting, tree inventory and management planning, tree maintenance, and educational projects that explain the importance of planting and maintaining trees in communities.

Albany County

City of Albany – $25,000: Completion of the city’s Street Tree Inventory and Management Plan.

Allegany County

Village of Cuba – $2,500: Tree Planting Project - planting of 34 bare root trees in Willow Bank Park and along West Main St. and Chamberlain Park.

Bronx County

Van Corlandt & Pelham Bay Parks Admin. – $20,000: Pelham Bay Park
Forest Restoration Project - volunteers will remove invasive exotic plants and restore native vegetation.

Broome County

City of Binghamton – $5,000: Binghamton Forestry Streetscape Initiative
- comprehensive planning and education effort to promote the benefits of the city’s street trees.

Cattaraugus County

Village of Gowanda – $7,500: “Re-Leaf Gowanda” - planting 115 trees throughout the village.

Chemung County

City of Elmira – $6,150: Elmira Citizen Tree Planting Program - volunteers will plant 100 trees throughout the city.

Village of Horseheads – $1,850: A study and analysis of the village urban forest by conducting a trained volunteer village tree inventory.

Columbia County

Hudson Development Corporation – $2,500: Planting of 12 trees along Union St.

City of Hudson – $3,900: The Hudson Community Tree Plan will inventory the city’s trees and develop a planting plan.

Cortland County

City of Cortland – $3,500: Shade Tree Project - planting of 34 trees in downtown parking lots.

Dutchess County

Village of Pawling – $5,000: Conduct a tree inventory and develop a
community forestry plan.

Village of Red Hook – $7,500: Red Hook Street Tree Project – planting of 100 street trees in the village.

Erie County

Town of Tonawanda – $7,500: Planting of trees in the town.

Keep Western NY Beautiful– $20,000: Planting of 100 trees along streets and vacant lots in underserved neighborhoods.

City of Buffalo – $50,000: Urban Forest Master Plan Implementation – removal of high-risk trees and other tree care applications.

City of Buffalo – $20,000: City of Buffalo Tree Planting – planting of 100 trees throughout the city.

Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Society, Inc. – $7,495:
Botanical Gardens
Arboretum Project – planting of 46 trees.

Village of Williamsville – $4,000: Conduct a village tree inventory and develop a tree management plan.

Jefferson County

City of Watertown – $5,000: Community Reforestation Project - planting of 165 trees within the Arsenal Street Parking Lot, along Main Avenue, and other locations.

Livingston County

Village of Avon – $1,500: Completion of a village risk tree assessment and management plan.

Village of Geneseo – $7,500: Planting of 40 trees within the rights-of-way of South St. and Center St.

Monroe County

Village of Brockport – $4,040: Inventory of public street and park trees in the village.

City of Rochester-Forestry – $12,075: Sebastian Park restoration and tree planting.

New York County

Friends of Gateway, Inc. – $7,500: Greenhouse Education Center - Tree Planting Activities – planting of 300-400 seedlings and young trees at various locations throughout the City.

New York City Parks Department – $2,500: Jackie Robinson Park Hillside Renovations - planting of 33 trees.

NY City Parks Foundation – $50,000: East Harlem Trees for Public Health – stewardship program for tree care and protection.

Friends of Greenwich Street – $15,000: Tree planting and development of a tree planting plan.

Harlem Gateway Committee – $20,000: Central Harlem Street Tree Initiative - planting of trees along 118th Street.

Onondaga County

City of Syracuse – $25,000: Greening Syracuse’s Southside – completion of a tree inventory and master plan for this underserved neighborhood.

City of Syracuse – $7,500: Community Tree Planting - Volunteers will plant 75 bare root trees along streets and in parks.

Oneida County

City of Rome – $5,000: Planting of 54 trees for the East Dominick, Main St. Corridor.

City of Rome – $5,000: Conduct a Municipal Tree Inventory.

Orange County

City of Port Jervis – $7,500: Planting 20 trees for Jersey Avenue beautification.

Oswego County

City of Fulton – $5,000: Completion of a street tree inventory for the city.

City of Oswego – $7,500: Planting of 80 trees along city streets and in parks.

Queens County

Greater Jamaica Development Corp. – $20,000: “Critical Perimeter Planting” – buffering neighborhoods from industrial sites by planting 24 street trees.

Rensselaer County

Capital District Gardens – $7,500: Cohoes Street planting of 50 trees.

Schenectady County

Re-Tree Schenectady – $4,843: 2005 Neighborhood Tree Project – planting of 125 trees along neighborhood streets through out the city.

Schoharie County

Village of Cobleskill –$7,500: Planting of 52 trees along East Main Street/Route 7.

Suffolk County

Town of Babylon – $5,000: Planting of 26 street trees in Copiague.

Washington County

Village of Cambridge – $3,000: Trees for Cambridge Project - community tree planting in neighborhoods and parks.

Village of Cambridge – $1,000: The Community Forestry Planning Project will develop a “Best Management Practice” Plan and Handbook and a Forest Management Brochure.

Westchester County

Village of Port Chester – $2,500: Conduct a Downtown Tree Survey to contribute to downtown revitalization efforts.

Village of Irvington – $5,000: Development of the Irvington Street Tree Master Plan.

Town of Cortlandt – $4,500: Conduct a street and park tree inventory for the Hamlet of Verplanck.
