Today from 5 to 7pm Binghamton University’s Animal Alliance and Binghamton Can Do Better will be outside the Memorial Arena protesting the Hanneford circus, which has a long documented history of animal abuse. They will also be out again on Saturday, April 30th, from 9am until 6pm.
Last year the protest drew 25-30 people. Once again, we will be distributing coloring books, crayons, and stickers to kids as well as informational leaflets about Hanneford’s history of mistreatment. Unlike other circuses, Hanneford leases its acts, which further corrodes accountability and ensures mistreatment.
Since last year, BU’s Animal Alliance and Binghamton Can Do Better has worked to help gain support of a legislative initiative to ban wild animal acts from the arena. There is currently over 1,200 signatures and growing. The petition can be found at https://www.change.org/p/broome-county-legislator-ban-animal-acts-in-broome-county
“In the end,” one of the co-organizers Joseph Leeson-Schatz commented, “we hope to show people that we should be teaching our children compassion and not that animals are ours to abuse for entertainment. With so many other great things in the area there truly is no excuse for animal abuse.”
